“I am inspired to tell stories with my designs from inspiration, to construction and finally the piece(s)”
I am the founder and creative director of my autonomous brand “Asano”. Following the death of my Mum in August of 2018, I found solace in crocheting after over a decade hiatus. I would sit on my bedroom floor and just crochet all day and night, this quickly rekindled my love for fashion especially garment construction.
As a little girl, I’d spend my television rights time (that I shared with my brothers) watching runway and fashion shows. I have always been in love with fashion; from a construction point of view. When I saw a flounce defying gravity or an intriguing neck line on the runway, I wondered how it was made and what inspired the designer.
Not knowing what was possible working in the fashion industry, I didn’t “follow my dream” I went on to get a degree in Cell Biology and Genetics from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. I was about to enroll for a master degree in genetics when my Mum passed, devastated, I was forced to slow down and really do what makes me happy. Although, I must say that I am grateful to my degree in Biology for helping me build up discipline that have helped me throughout my career in fashion.
I am inspired to tell stories with my designs from inspiration, to construction and finally the piece(s), stories that can be told from generation to generation and garments that can be passed down from one generation to the next. Every piece meticulously handmade with love.
Thank you supporting individual designers like myself.
